Kendall does not openly respond to John MacArthur or the "Strange Fire" conference, but has taken the occasion to write a book that strongly emphasizes the continuation of the supernatural gifts of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit's "direct and immediate" work in our lives, and reformed theology. Kendall's emphasis on the activity of the Spirit in assurance of salvation and transformation opens the door to the current work of the Spirit by bridging into the supernatural with sound theology and common experience.While hardly an exhaustive work on the Holy Spirit, Kendall's book stands as an inspiring and accessible introduction to the reformed charismatic perspective.Kendall's writing remains exceptionally clear and accessible throughout the book, in spite of handling some rather deep theological issues and citing a number of nuances in theology from different puritan writers. He illustrates his theology with testimonies from his own life, illuminating how his own personal journey and his relationship with Christ revealed his current stance on the continuing operation of the gifts of the Spirit and reformed Calvinism. The book also draws heavily from the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Lloyd Jones, Kendall's mentor and one of the most respected reformed preachers of the last century. Jones' own embrasure of the gifts and operation of the Holy Spirit and his passionate advocacy for receiving the Spirit's empowerment stands as one of Kendall's most drawn upon arguments. These factors make the book seem more like an appeal to the reformed church to embrace the Spirit, though Kendall does take a significant amount of time advocating reformed theology to Charismatic readers.I greatly appreciated Kendall's emphasis on the transforming power of the Holy Spirit. A large portion of Holy Fire reminded me of the teaching of Roy Hession and Norman Grubb, which sprang out of the revivals in Africa in the 1950's. The reminder of the Spirit's work to convict, correct, encourage, refresh, inspire, and cleanse is desperately needed in the church today, as is Kendall's teaching on grieving and quenching the Spirit. One of the most disappointing parts of the book was his outlandish claims regarding open-theism and "hyper grace" teaching. While I'm not an open advocate of either, Kendall's brief and scathing misrepresentation of both views will not help either side of the debates regarding God's foreknowledge or His grace. His final chapter, which contains a prophetic word for the future of the Church was exhilarating and the most inspiring and poignant chapter in the book for me.While I would only recommend portions of this book, it stands as an important bridge from cessationism into the work of the Spirit. I hope it will have a profound impact on the reformed church and a positive impact in redirecting the Charismatic church back to focusing on transformation and a step by step walk with the Spirit of God.
Kendall embraces Reformed theology (after growing up Nazarene). He also believes the gifts of the Holy Spirit are operative today. This may be a surprise because he was trained and ordained in a theological setting that taught him to resist charismatic teaching and experience.I really like Kendall's book (perhaps because I am Reformed and charismatic). He has written it to (re)introduce us to the Holy Spirit, to show the inconsistency of the teaching of some evangelicals, and to warn of strange fire.He notes that some Christians emphasize the Word and other the Holy Spirit. He says both are right but the problem is that neither will learn from the other. He desires to see a combination of sound biblical teaching and the encouragement of a greater measure of the Holy Spirit.Kendall is not naive. He admits there is the counterfeit, “strange fire.†He identifies the pitfalls in the charismatic/pentecostal movement and warns against them, such as a defective view of God. He does the same for the Reformed camp, such as cessationism (the idea that miracles ceased when the canon was completed).He explores what every Christian should know about the Holy Spirit (21 truths). He also writes about Dr. Lloyd-Jones (his predecessor at Westminster Chapel), how to recognize strange fire and what lies behind it, the sensitive nature of the Holy Spirit, his own testimony, cessationism and its consequences, and evidence of the Holy Spirit.Kendall is open and honest in this book. It is a good look at who the Holy Spirit is, how He is active today, and how that activity is sometimes misunderstood and misused. Any of Reformed theology will find a balanced perspective in this book.
All in all a good book, and I can appreciate the perspective Kendall brings to an already-heated-but-lacking-deep-thought debate regarding the question "Does God continue to give spiritual gifts to the church today? If so, which ones, and what are they like?" Cessationists believe God does not give most (or all), but here R.T. Kendall argues the gifts continue because there is no scriptural mandate that they do not.If they stopped, it was not God who stopped them, but the church by refusing to receive them! Coming from an intellectual and theological powerhouse like Kendall, I expected this to have more of its time devoted to scripture instead of just a counter argument to the cessationist position. This is not to say Kendall was unscriptural, but that the focus of the book was not scripture. Most of the book is him warning against strange fire (a la John MacArthur's point of view) and--unlike MacArthur--offerring his own defense for "holy fire," or proper use of spiritual gifts like prophecy and healing.He has no hidden agenda about it, frequently promoting his other books for the reader to see his arguments for certain points in depth, and he frequently states this book is written in direct opposition to John MacArthur's Strange Fire book published in 2013 and the corresponding conference. Kendall also states he did not have access to the book or conference before writing, and it shows: even though he neatly matched tit-for-tat what John MacArthur discusses in Strange Fire, all that comes across is just another viewpoint on the subject rather than a fresh examination of the scriptures. I have heard it said "the worst way to discuss theology is in reaction to bad theology."I expected him to actually refute the opponent's argument (in debate terms), instead of only rebutting it (showing another valid point of view without dismantling the opposition), and maybe that was my fault, but hey--the book was free under a promotion, so I don't mind!All in all, a 3-star book since it serves well as a counter-argument (the purpose for which it was written), but I wish it had done something more besides merely counter MacArthur's cessationism.
