This is a great book for the absolute beginner. The beginning of the book has vital information needed to properly care for the instrument and for learning proper embouchure. I used this when I was in 7th and 8th grade and now, over 10 years later, I am using it again to re-learn how to play.
I play tuba since the 90s. I remember my Essential Elements back in the middle school. This is still a solid book to progress from and the online mp3 accompaniment definitely helps you play along with a band.
The book covers all of the information required to get started, which includes position of the lips and the proper way to blow into the trumpet. Even though I play woodwind instruments, I learned to play trumpet many years ago. After a long period of not playing and now learning to play all over again, my plan is to study each page carefully without skipping any sections or assuming knowledge of any aspect of this instrument. So far I'm learning and progressing quite well. I have used this book for other instruments as well and am quite pleased with its design.
Easy to read and follow. Start at the beginning of the book and it walks you through how to read music and how to make notes so if you go through the book page by page your skills grow steadily. I played years ago and I'm enjoying the refresher. Also suitable for a new beginner - child or adult. Full fingering chart at back of book.
This book brings back many memories of middle school band. I learned a lot from this series of books and am now again learning as an adult. I find it funny that the voice for the audio samples is the same as growing up -- provides a bit of nostalgia. I learned clarinet growing up with these and I'm learning trumpet quite quickly just the same. I'll admit I don't have the embrasure for what I'm able to read just yet -- but great quality music with a play along track that makes it much more worth it than just playing/learning alone.
I bought this book, I LOVE IT!!!! I now have learned 2 instruments from the Essential Elements books and I can positively say that I love them and this book is no exception. This series of books takes you step by step at learning your instrument and do so very effectively by teaching you one or two notes at a time then practicing the crap out of them before moving on. It is the age old but very effective practice makes perfect method.HOWEVER!!!! MAKE SURE YOU READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY!!!!On page 25 of the book where it teaches you the note C there is a MAJOR typo. It tells you that C is the fourth fret on the G string making that strings notes go G,Ab,A,Bb,C,B and that is VERY wrong. The G strings notes should instead go G,Ab,A,Bb,B,C. MAKE SURE YOU NOTICE THIS AND CHANGE IT because it may not be very important now but it will lead to disaster in the future. Just remember, the bass goes up chromatically (if you don't know what that is Google it :)) .Now because there is that typo you may be asking, "Why would I want this book then". The truth is that aside from a private teacher this book is the best (in my opinion) out there to learn a new instrument so I highly recommend it. Just watch for page 25. :)
Purchased Essential Elements for Band, Books 1 & 2, and Essential Techniques for Band, Book 3 by Hal Leonard along with a first Clarinet for my 11 year old granddaughter. Also purchased a second set for myself since i haven't played my Clarinet since 1957 in HS, and i want to see what she's learning. Surprised me, when her Father, (my son), was the first to use the books to assemble her Clarinet and played some basic notes without having any prior musical instrument experience. For me, at 73, it's a good refresher and I certainly need all the basics before I can progress to Hal Leonard's Clarinet Books "Songs of the 40's Songs of the 50"s, & Songs of the 60's".
This is the exact book my son uses in his band class at school. The teacher recommended one to keep at home for practicing. He enjoys having it at the house to practice with and he'll always have it for the future too. It was in great condition when received.
